We meet Marta Gil at a cafe near the Teatro Sao Luiz. She is all smiles.
This writer (who is from Ireland) confesses he is not aware of the TV celebrity landscape in Portugal to which Marta is a bit of a name – so he is unsure what to expect. A quick look at what Marta has been up to and it is clear she is versatile – featuring in everything from soap operas to reality TV shows to acting on the stage. And lots more besides.
Marta with her flowing dark hair is very nice to us before we start to roll camera on our little internet show – People of Lisbon – but once the camera does roll her glow and charm noticeably ratchets up. She positively eats up the camera. She’s a natural.
We decide that the exterior of Sao Luiz may be as good a place as any to start our interview and take some photos. “I’ve never acted here. But of course, I’ve been to see many shows. I did an audition for a musical here when I was 19 years old… but I didn’t get it,” she points that out with her finger in the air. It is noticeable that Marta is constantly animated as she talks with her hands and arms constantly moving. And after most things Marta says, she laughs.
Thankfully Marta is easy to get along with, and she doesn’t take herself too seriously. That is always a relief when interviewing anyone, especially a celebrity. We ask Marta what is the best side to film her from… “actually I don’t have that. I’m the easy-going actress.”
As we walk on Marta shows off a few of her dance steps. “You should have told me, and I would have brought my gettoblaster,” as she gives us a pirouette, or something of that nature. “I always wanted to be an actress. As a kid I was always performing.”
Marta is the first performing artist in her family. “The rest of my family, they all have “normal” professions,” she says. “Now they are proud of me, but it took a while. My parents came from a different generation. It was a generation where it was not cool to be an artist.”
Speaking of her versatility, we point out to Marta that she is a TV presenter, actress, model… “No, I’m not a model,” she interjects. “But on your Instagram…” we respond. “If I am, I’m a small model. I’m 5’1”. No. I’m not a model at all.” She thinks it’s hilarious we would suggest such a thing.
So, what explains Marta’s versatility? “I can communicate. I think that’s what it is all about. It’s about communicating.”
We ask Marta about her experience in the Big Brother house. “I was in the house the full time. It was 2 months. I got 4th place.” But what was it like? “Time in there goes slowly. At a certain point you just want to get out.”
As we openly admit to not having watched Big Brother, we are curious what character Marta had in the house. Was she the sweet one? Was she the nasty one? “I was the girl that would say everything. I was the one that would say the truth.” Marta tells us that there was a big love story drama in her Big Brother house. “It was amazing. I couldn’t believe what was happening. It was better than a script. No one could write the drama.”
Part of Marta’s story is that she gave the LA / Hollywood life a try. She was there for a couple of years. “In LA it was just auditions, auditions, auditions. That was my full-time job.” Marta explains that Portugal is different from LA. “In Portugal they just call you if they want to work with you. They should have more auditions here.”
As we take photographs of Marta, we see no reason that she could not be a model. She certainly has all the moves, and she can happily strike the pose. She is a photographer’s dream. Easy to work with. Perhaps that’s the problem – she is too bubbly to be a model.
As we snap snap snap we begin to notice that Marta looks familiar. She looks like someone really famous. But we can’t quite put our finger on it. Who do people say you look like? “Salma Hayek,” she says with an extra big smile. It’s true… she does look like Salma Hayek. “We are the same height, and we are both great actresses” Marta says bashfully.
Despite her diminutive stature, Marta has a huge personality and for that reason Marta feels more comfortable acting on stage. “I have a loud voice. I gesticulate a lot. In theatre I can over act more which is more like my natural self. In TV I need to think more about it. I need to think about the microphones.”
Speaking of TV, Marta needs to leave us as she has a 7am call time the next morning to shoot the soap opera Festa e Festa. “It’s huge in Portugal. Everyone knows Festa e Festa.” In the show Marta plays a former politician who has come back to town to reclaim her love – a dream doctor type.
It’s a pity Marta must leave, as we sense she could be fun to party with.
We part by asking Marta is there anything about her that not many people know. “I’m not that mysterious,” she says with yet another laugh. “I was on Big Brother, come on, everyone knows everything about me.”

Encontramo-nos com a Marta Gil num café perto do Teatro São Luiz. Ela é toda sorrisos.
Este entrevistador (que é da Irlanda) confessa que não conhece o mundo das celebridades televisivas em Portugal, no qual o nome de Marta Gil já ganhou um lugar – por isso não sabe bem o que tem pela frente. Uma rápida pesquisa pelo que Marta tem feito e torna-se clara a sua versatilidade – está em todas, de novelas a reality shows ou aos palcos. E muito mais.
Com o cabelo escuro e esvoaçante, Marta é muito simpática connosco, ainda antes de ligarmos a câmara para dar início ao nosso pequeno programa da internet – People of Lisbon -, mas assim que a câmara se liga, o brilho e charme dela acendem-se ainda mais. Ela devora a câmara. É uma natural born. Nasceu para isto.
Decidimos que o exterior do Teatro São Luiz é um lugar tão bom quanto qualquer outro para começar a nossa entrevista e tirar algumas fotos. “Nunca atuei aqui. Mas claro que vi aqui muitas peças de teatro. E fiz cá uma audição, para um musical, quando tinha 19 anos… mas não consegui o lugar”, diz, de dedo no ar. Marta fala com as mãos, os braços estão em constante movimento, o corpo é todo expressão e ela parece estar sempre animada. Ri, depois da maioria das coisas que diz.
Felizmente, Marta é bem disposta e não se leva muito a sério. Isso é sempre um alívio quando entrevistamos alguém, especialmente uma celebridade. Perguntamos a Marta qual é o melhor lado para filmá-la… “na verdade, não tenho. Sou uma atriz sem manias.”
Enquanto caminhamos, Marta mostra alguns de seus passos de dança. “Se me tivesses dito, teria trazido a minha aparelhagem de som”, digo eu, enquanto ela faz uma pirueta, ou qualquer coisa parecida. “Sempre quis ser atriz. Quando era miúda, estava sempre a representar.”
Marta é a primeira artista performativa da família dela. “O resto da minha família, todos têm profissões ‘normais’”, diz ela. “Agora estão orgulhosos de mim, mas demorou um bocadinho. Os meus pais são de uma geração diferente. Uma geração em que não era fixe ser artista.”
Ao falar da sua versatilidade, dizemos de Marta que é apresentadora de TV, atriz, modelo… “Não, não sou modelo”, intervém. “Mas no seu Instagram…” argumentamos. “Se sou, sou um modelo pequeno. Meço 1,55 m”. “Não. Não sou modelo”. Ela acha hilariante que pensemos que ela é modelo.
O que explica a versatilidade da Marta? “Eu sei comunicar. Acho que é disso que se trata. De comunicação”.
Perguntamos a Marta sobre sua experiência na casa do Big Brother Famosos. “Fiquei lá até ao fim. Foram dois meses. Fiquei em 4º lugar.” Mas como era? “O tempo ali passa devagar. A certa altura, só queres é sair.”
Como confessamos abertamente não ter visto o Big Brother Famosos, ficamos curiosos sobre qual era a personagem de Marta na casa. Era a doce? Era a desagradável? “Eu era a que dizia tudo. Era a que dizia a verdade.” Marta conta que houve um grande drama, uma grande história de amor, na casa do Big Brother Famosos. “Foi fantástico. Eu não queria acreditar no que estava a acontecer. Era melhor do que um guião. Ninguém poderia ter escrito aquilo.”
Da história de Marta, destaca-se uma incursão pelo sonho de Los Angeles/Hollywood. Viveu lá dois anos. “Em LA a vida era apenas audições, audições, audições. Era esse o meu trabalho a tempo integral.” Marta explica que Portugal é diferente de LA. “Em Portugal só te ligam se quiserem trabalhar contigo. Deveriam fazer mais audições cá.”
Durante a sessão fotográfica com Marta, não vemos razão para que não possa ser modelo. Domina todos os movimentos e posa alegremente. É o sonho de qualquer fotógrafo. Fácil de trabalhar. Talvez seja esse o problema – é muito exuberante para modelo.
Flash, flash, flash, à medida que disparamos, notamos que Marta nos parece familiar. Parece-se com alguém realmente famoso. Mas não arriscamos. Com quem é que as pessoas dizem que és parecida? “Salma Hayek”, diz ela com um sorriso enorme. É verdade… ela parece-se com Salma Hayek. “Temos a mesma altura e somos as duas ótimas atrizes”, diz Marta com um sorriso.
Apesar da sua pequena estatura, Marta tem uma personalidade enorme e por isso sente-se mais confortável a atuar no palco. “Eu tenho uma voz forte. Gesticulo muito. No teatro, sinto-me mais à vontade, é mais próximo do meu eu natural. Na TV, tenho de pensar mais. Tenho de pensar nos microfones.”
Por falar em TV, é hora de Marta nos deixar porque tem de estar pronta às 7h da manhã seguinte para filmar a novela “Festa é Festa”. “É enorme em Portugal. Toda a gente conhece a ‘Festa é Festa?” Na série, Marta interpreta uma ex-política que voltou à cidade para reivindicar o seu amor – um médico de sonho.
É uma pena que Marta tenha de ir, pois sentimos que ela deve ser divertida como companheira de festa.
Despedimo-nos perguntando a Marta se há alguma coisa sobre ela que pouca gente saiba. “Não sou lá muito misteriosa,”, diz ela com mais uma gargalhada. “Estive no Big Brother, não é?, toda a gente sabe tudo sobre mim.”
