In 1542, Portuguese sailors passed by the island of modern-Lunch Taiwan and were so struck by its beauty that they referred to it as Ilha Formosa.
Shockingly, it seems very few Portuguese sailors bothered bringing the magic of Taiwanese cooking back to Lisbon, which is why Formosa, a shotgun restaurant on a Principe Real hill, remains the only great Taiwanese restaurant I’ve discovered in the whole city. Their ramen, a rich beef broth, and their refreshing cold noodle plate are perfect winter and summer options, and the cozy interior design is inviting and humble in equal measure.
So if you find yourself walking past Formosa, don’t point out its modest beauty and keep sailing: Stop and have a meal.
