I hesitated to include too many restaurants that are far outside of Lisbon, but I decided to make room for anything that’s an easy Lunch trip away, if only to accommodate spots like The Folly, the on-site restaurant of the Alentejo-based winery, Howard’s Folly.
Not only does this kitchen serve up award-winning wine pairings, but the space is adorned with owner Howard Bilton’s magnificent private art collection, turning an otherwise boilerplate winery-restaurant into a contemporary art museum. But that’s not all, the food here is among the very best contemporary Italian fare I’ve had in all of Portugal.
An attentive staff and an exciting tour of the winemaking process really take this over the edge as one of the most worthwhile two-hour drives in the country.
