Chef Louise Bourrat and her partner Mark O’lyn opened Gancho, in the heart of Alfama to counter the haute-cuisine elegance of Louise’ other restaurant, the excellent BouBou’s. Frankly, Gancho is on a whole other level of brilliant; the kind of low-key gem that locals and tourists alike dream of stumbling upon.
It’s an unassuming restaurant that doesn’t telegraph the surprises that live inside its very small walls, but as soon as you take a bite of their fresh bread you realize that this isn’t just another ordinary neo-tasca. Next thing you know you are bombarded by Louise and Marko’s respective French-Italian heritage, taking you from oysters and eggs mayo to a spicy cabbage with Szechuan sauce and a rotation of fresh pastas.
Masterful stuff.
